Living simply, or simplifying things where ever possible, is a tactic you can apply to help enjoy your time and love your life.

When things are simplified you will be more productive, feel better about how you utilize your time, have an easier time with decision making and an overall happier and more content disposition.

When it comes to how you store items and what you choose to host in your home, KEEP IT SUPER SIMPLE = KISS!

If you are tired of your home space feeling cluttered and the weight of “stuff” weighing you down, following these simple steps to organize your home in just one week!

and remember…..KISS

Before you start:  – get some containers or boxes together along with some trash bags. You will have items you can give away to others you know in need, donate to a charity, sell and a lot of trash as well.

  • Next: pick the room or closet you will start with and set a timer. Sometimes things seem very hard and overwhelming but knowing there is an end to a daunting task or project can make it seem easier to overcome. Set the timer for 15 minutes or even just 5 minutes at a time. When the timer goes off, give yourself permission to be finished that task. However, if you are motivated enough to keep going, set it again and like before, give yourself permission to stop for the time being once the timer goes off. Focus on each room, closet, cupboard and drawer one by one. You will pick up momentum as you go. It is very possible to declutter and organize an entire home in under one week. I know because I’ve done it!
  • Get rid of hot spots: hot spots are areas in your home that collect clutter. It is as though they are a magnetic force field for all things anyone holds in their hands while passing by these areas. Tables, stairs, ledges, counter tops…etc. all collect ALL THE STUFF. You need to stop this ASAP.
  • EVERYTHING needs a home: When all items in your house have a home, things are simple and organized. This also avoids the build up on hot spots because we now know where things should go and aren’t left guessing or unsure. A very helpful tip here is to ensure all like items are homed together. Don’t have 6 storage spots for kids craft supplies for example, organize them and store them all together in a designated area.
  • Downsize your stash: Do you need 10 bath towels per person or 2? Do you need 24 coffee mugs or 4 or 6? The answers to these questions will be different for everyone but really strive for KISS. Have only what you need and use (or love).
  • Be intentional: with them items you bring into the home. Don’s shop because you are bored, don’t buy things just because there was a sale (unless its an item you need and use), when you are bringing new things into the house really think about their purpose or the joy they will bring you first. Remember, they too will require a home once inside so they stay tidy and organized.
  • Lastly: keep a donate bin somewhere accessible in the house. A closet or laundry room is ideal. Decluttering is an on-going task and you can easily add items to it as you go. When it is full take it to the charity of your choice or arrange for charity pick up and start again! I choose to keep ours in my laundry room. I add all kinds of items to it but children’s worn or outgrown clothes are the fast moving things around here!
